Resourcefulness and the Power of Collaboration

Recently, I had the pleasure of joining Rob Cairns as a guest on his SDM (Stunning Digital Marketing) Show podcast, where we dove deep into the topic of MindShifting—the ability to change how we think and respond to life’s challenges. Our conversation was rich with insights, personal stories, and practical strategies. In this post, I want to share two of the most impactful aspects we discussed during the recording: resourcefulness and the art of turning conflict into collaboration.

Resourcefulness:

Tapping Into Your Best Self Resourcefulness is all about getting yourself into a state where you can be creative, effective, and resilient, rather than stuck in a fight-or-flight mindset. We discussed that there are four main ways to access your own resourceful state:

  1. Self-awareness (or metacognition): Sometimes, simply recognizing that you’re in a reactive or stressed state is enough to help you step back and regain control. That moment of awareness can be a powerful catalyst for change.
  2. Dialogue with yourself: Asking questions like, “What would make this situation more enjoyable?” or “What if I’m wrong?” can open your mind to new possibilities and help you shift your perspective.
  3. Distraction and self-care: Activities like walking, meditation, or listening to music can calm your mind and create space for positive self-talk and problem-solving.
  4. Getting help from others: letting a trusted person ask you the questions that will help you recover from negative emotional reactions to resourceful responses.

During the SDM podcast, Rob shared how regular walks and daily journaling have helped him process emotions and clear his head. He reminded me—and our listeners—that taking care of your mind is just as important as taking care of your body. Sometimes, seeking help from others is not just okay, but necessary.

Conflict and Collaboration: Setting Boundaries and Building Bridges

Another crucial aspect of MindShifting we explored on the podcast is learning how to handle conflict and turn it into collaboration. Too often, we see conflict as something to avoid or eliminate, but conflict can be a powerful driver for growth—if we approach it the right way.

One lesson I’ve learned is the difference between being assertive and being aggressive. Assertiveness is stating your needs and boundaries clearly and professionally, while aggression is trying to control or manipulate others.

I once worked with a single mom who struggled to ask for help, feeling it was selfish. By reframing her perspective and encouraging her to assert her needs, she was able to get the support she needed during a difficult time.

Rob and I also discussed the importance of communication and boundaries. Setting boundaries doesn’t mean you don’t care about someone; it means you’re taking care of yourself so you can show up fully for others.

Rob shared on the SDM podcast how he and his partner set expectations around their time together, and how practicing saying “no” has helped both of them maintain balance in their lives.
