For the past two weeks, we have been offering up daily Mindshifting practices that you can begin to use right away to start (or continue) your path from the limbic-driven ‘survival mind,’ toward the more reasoned sage mind, governed, instead, by the pre-frontal cortex.
Practiced daily, these simple intentionalities will create the necessary ‘pause’ in your cognitive processes necessary to approach a situation, or those you are interacting with, from a more resourceful, resilient and collaborative place – and this is often the catalyst to real positive change.
Here are your seven daily Mindshifting practices to try this week:
- When you feel yourself accommodating someone when you really don’t want to, find a way to let them know what you want. Do this in a collaborating way, not apologizing, but just asserting because it is important to you.
- Have a conversation with someone where the first five things you say support them or show curiosity in what they are saying. Where, for those five responses you are not describing your own situation, you are not arguing, you are not pointing out what they could have done or said differently. See if you can make a game out of giving five responses where you are only supporting and showing curiosity and empathy in what they are saying.
- Imagine something you are sure of that has to deal with people you disagree with. Come up with three plausible reasons you might be wrong.
- When someone points out how you are wrong or what you can do better, imagine how they might be 10% right.
- Resolve today that you will not say, “Yes, but” to anyone, no matter how tempting it might be. Instead, respond with how you like something in their idea, agree with something, or, even just let them know where there is common ground.
- List five things you are grateful for. They don’t have to be huge, just five things you are grateful for. Then repeat once more during the day.
- When something unexpected happens today, especially if it is not welcome or even a failure by you or someone else, explain to yourself why it will be a funny story in a month.
I would love to hear any stories of how you have engaged these practices and what changes you felt as a result.
