PODCAST – From Stuck to Resourceful: My MindShifting Conversation with Denise Griffitts

Every now and then you have a conversation that reminds you why you do the work. My time with Denise Griffitts on her Your Partner in Success Radio podcast was one of those—warm, curious, generous, and full of practical insight. Denise has been hosting for 17+ years and it shows: she listens deeply, asks precise questions, and somehow pulls the best stories out of you. I left energized and grateful.

Below is a quick recap of what we covered and the takeaways listeners have told me were most useful.

From EdTech to MindShifting

I shared my journey from running businesses and advising schools to building a community around MindShifting. Around 2017, I realized that despite years in education, we still weren’t equipping people with the core skills for life and work. That realization sparked a shift: away from tools and toward how people make sense of situations and move forward when things are messy.

That shift became MindShifting, a practical framework for navigating complexity through three habits:

  • Resourcefulness — Accessing your best thinking on demand
  • Resilience — Testing, learning, and iterating instead of clinging to “the one right answer”
  • Collaboration — Moving through conflict in ways that align people and unlock progress

Why Our First Reactions Get in the Way

We dug into the neuroscience in plain English. Our survival brain (the limbic system) reacts in hundredths of a second—fight, flight, freeze, habit, or “follow the group.” Our prefrontal cortex—the part that reasons, plans, empathizes—doesn’t fully engage for a couple seconds. So we often rationalize an instant, emotional decision rather than choose a good one.

Bottom line: if you want access to creativity, judgment, and empathy, you first need to calm your limbic response.

Simple Reset Techniques You Can Use Today

We covered a handful of practical tools listeners can start using immediately:

  • “Perhaps I can.”
When you hear “I can’t,” don’t argue with yourself. Gently open a door: Perhaps I can. Your brain will start proposing options.
  • From Zero.
Stop arguing with what “should have” happened. Ask: Given where I am now, what do I want to happen next? Then act.
  • Box Breathing (4–4–4–4).
Inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4. Three rounds can be enough to shift you from reactive to resourceful.
  • The Emotional Cookie Jar.
Keep a short list of times you persisted and prevailed. When things get hard, read it. Remind your nervous system: I’ve done hard things before.
  • Anchors.
Find a quirky but reliable pattern interrupt (a short walk, a yawn stretch, stepping away for 60 seconds). Use it the moment you feel triggered.

Resilience Without the Myth of “The One Right Answer”

We talked about approaching new problems like experiments: try something smart-but-small, watch the results, adjust. Expertise matters, but in novel situations learning loops beat rigid plans.

Conflict That Creates, Not Destroys

We previewed ideas from my upcoming book, Conflict & Collaboration: MindShifting with Mitch (Volume 3) (targeting November 2025). Conflict isn’t the enemy—unskillful conflict is. We explored:

  • Five modes of handling conflict (and how to use them resourcefully)
  • Language that reduces threat responses and increases alignment
  • Giving feedback people welcome instead of resist
  • Making firm decisions in ways others can accept

Why I Loved This Conversation

Denise is the kind of interviewer who makes you feel both seen and challenged—in the best way. She threads rigor with kindness, and she brings her own practices (gratitude, curiosity, turning problems over to the subconscious) that make the discussion tangible. If you’re not already subscribed to her show, do yourself a favor.

If the ideas here resonate, you can:

Huge thanks to Denise for a thoughtful, energizing conversation—and to you for listening, reflecting, and practicing. The more of us who get good at resourcefulness, resilience, and collaboration, the better our lives (and our world) get.
