Are You Really Thinking, or Is Your Brain on Autopilot?

If you’re like most people, you believe you’re making thoughtful, rational decisions throughout your day. You might even pride yourself on your ability to analyze situations, weigh options, and choose the best path forward. But what if I told you that, much of the time, you’re not really reasoning at all? Instead, your brain is running on autopilot—reacting, not reflecting—often sabotaging your happiness and success.

This isn’t a personal failing. It’s the way our brains are wired. The good news is, with awareness and a few practical techniques, you can shift from reactive to resourceful thinking. That’s the essence of MindShifting, and it’s a skill anyone can learn.

The Power of Thought and Self-Awareness

Before you can achieve anything—whether it’s growing your business, building relationships, or simply making it through a tough day—you have to believe it’s possible. Every action starts with a thought. But here’s the catch: most of us have never been taught how to manage our thoughts, or even to notice them.

We’re taught math, history, and science, but rarely do we learn how to use our minds in ways that serve our long-term interests. As a result, we fall into mental habits and patterns that may have helped us survive childhood or fit in socially, but now hold us back as adults.

Self-awareness is the first step. It’s about noticing your thoughts and asking, “Is this belief or reaction actually serving me?” When you start to observe your mental patterns, you gain the power to choose your responses rather than simply react. This is where real change begins.

The Trap of the Survival Brain

One of the biggest obstacles to self-awareness is the illusion that we’re always reasoning. In reality, unless we’ve worked on understanding how our brains function, we’re often being manipulated by our survival brain—the limbic system. This part of the brain is ancient and powerful. Its job is to keep us safe, but it does so by reacting quickly to perceived threats, real or imagined.

When the limbic system is in charge, it shuts down the resourceful, reasoning part of our brain—the prefrontal cortex. We stop being creative, empathetic, or open to new ideas. Instead, our thinking becomes binary: right or wrong, safe or dangerous, us versus them. We become susceptible to confirmation bias, only seeing information that supports what we already believe.

How do you know when you’re stuck in your survival brain? You might feel anxious, exhausted, or victimized. You might find yourself thinking that others are incompetent or wrong, or that only you are capable of solving a problem. These feelings are red flags. They’re signals that it’s time to pause, interrupt your habitual response, and calm your limbic system.

Techniques for MindShifting and Value Alignment

So, how do you make the shift? The first step is to recognize the signs. Whenever you notice those feelings of anxiety, frustration, or superiority, take it as a cue to slow down. Simple techniques like deep breathing, taking a walk, or even listening to music can help quiet the limbic system. The goal is to create enough space for your resourceful brain to come back online.

Once you’ve calmed your survival brain, ask yourself a few key questions:

  • What am I really feeling right now?
  • Is this situation truly a threat, or just uncomfortable?
  • What outcome do I actually want?
  • Are my actions aligned with my core values?

Regularly reevaluating your values and aligning your actions with them is crucial. Our values change over time, and so should our responses. When you operate from a place of awareness and intention, you’re far more likely to make decisions that lead to long-term satisfaction and success.

Why This Matters

Too often, we live our lives on autopilot—reacting to situations, repeating old patterns, and wondering why we feel stuck or unfulfilled. The truth is, happiness and success aren’t just about working harder or being smarter. They’re about learning to direct your own mind, to interrupt unhelpful patterns, and to choose responses that serve your highest goals.

This is the heart of MindShifting. It’s not about denying your emotions or pretending everything is fine. It’s about understanding how your brain works, recognizing when you’re being hijacked by your survival instincts, and learning how to return to a place of resourcefulness and creativity.

If you’re interested in exploring these ideas in greater depth, my book, MindShifting: Stop Your Brain from Sabotaging Your Happiness and Success, goes into the science and practical strategies behind these concepts. It’s packed with tools to help you build awareness, break free from limiting patterns, and create the life you truly want.

Remember: the first step to changing your life is changing your mind. And that starts with awareness.
