Open the Door to Possibility: The Power of “Perhaps I Can”

1. What is MindShifting?

If you’ve ever wished you could think more clearly, react with less stress, or break free from old patterns, you’re not alone. That’s exactly why I created the MindShifting framework and wrote MindShifting: Stop Your Brain from Sabotaging Your Happiness and Success. MindShifting is all about understanding how our brains actually work—and learning simple, practical techniques to reset our thinking so we can respond, not just react, to life’s challenges.

2. A Key Tactic: The “Perhaps I Can” Exercise

One of the very first MindShifting tactics I teach—right in Chapter One—is the “Perhaps I Can” exercise. It’s simple, but surprisingly powerful. When we face a challenge or something we “know” we can’t do, we usually meet it with resistance or resignation. “Perhaps I Can” is about gently questioning that certainty, giving your mind just enough space to consider a new possibility. It’s not about forced positivity or blind optimism; it’s about opening a window for creative thinking and growth.

3. Walking Through the “Perhaps I Can” Mindshift

We’ve all seen people—maybe even ourselves—shut down at the thought of doing something new or difficult. You tell them (or yourself), “You can do it!” but the response is usually resistance or even outright pushback. That’s because the feeling of “I can’t” is rooted deep in our emotional brain, and when someone challenges it directly, it just feels threatening, not inspiring.

Try this instead:
Think of something you want to do, but honestly feel you can’t. Maybe it’s public speaking, learning a new skill, or even having a tough conversation. Notice the thoughts and feelings that come up—maybe it’s a voice saying, “I’ll never be able to,” or a sense of a locked door, or a wave of disappointment.

Now, gently say to yourself, “Perhaps I can.”

You’re not making a promise, and you’re not ignoring your fears. You’re simply introducing a possibility.

What happens next?
For most people, something shifts. Maybe your brain starts offering ideas you hadn’t considered before. Maybe you feel just a bit lighter, or imagine a crack opening in that locked door. Often, you begin to think about small steps, potential help, or creative workarounds.

Participants in my workshops have described feeling calmer, more hopeful, or even physically lighter. One person told me, “When I say ‘Perhaps I can,’ I actually notice my mind searching for solutions instead of shutting down.”

Does this work every single time? Of course not—no tool does. Sometimes your brain is just too practiced at “I can’t.” But like any muscle, possibility gets stronger with use. And even if “Perhaps I can” doesn’t get you all the way there, it can be the spark that leads to the next MindShifting technique.

Here’s why it’s so powerful:
When we tell ourselves “I can’t,” our brains slam the door on creativity and resourcefulness. “Perhaps I can” opens that door—even if it’s just a crack—and lets in the light.

And it works even better when it comes from inside, not outside. Telling someone “Perhaps you can” might help, but inviting them to ask it of themselves is where real change happens.

4. This Is Just One Piece of the Puzzle

“Perhaps I can” is only the beginning. In Chapter 1 of MindShifting, you’ll discover:

  • Why directly challenging certainty rarely leads to change
  • The science behind how your brain gets stuck (and how to get unstuck)
  • Techniques to move from “I can’t” to “Maybe I can,” and ultimately to “I will”
  • Real-life examples of people unlocking new possibilities for themselves

The book is full of practical, compassionate exercises that help you move past mental roadblocks—one shift at a time.
