Stop Trying to Be Right: It’s Not Working Anyhow

When was the last time you were sure you knew exactly what to do… and then reality refused to cooperate?

In this episode of MindShifting Monday With Mitch (our weekly Linkedin/Substack video series – Mondays at 4pm and 7pm EST), we explore a paradox at the heart of real-world success: you don’t succeed by nailing the perfect solution—you succeed by learning how to fail on purpose in smart, small ways.

Most of us were trained to think in straight lines: “I’ll do A, then B will happen, and I’ll get C.”

Our brains crave that certainty. So when life doesn’t follow the script—when the student shuts down, the boss blocks our idea, someone agrees with the other political party, or our spouse snaps back—we feel frustrated, stuck, or even ashamed. We double down on being “right,” instead of getting curious and resourceful.

This edition of MindShifting Monday With Mitch invites you to make a different move.

First, we challenge the idea that your job is to be perfect or to have “the answer.”

Instead, your real power comes from becoming resourceful: testing, learning, adapting, and staying effective even when things are messy and emotional.

You’ll see why the question “What should I do?” is less useful than “What might I try to learn from this?”

Second, we dig into what actually makes so many of your toughest problems complex rather than simple:

  • They’re novel enough that yesterday’s solution doesn’t quite fit today.
  • The butterfly effect is real—tiny words or gestures can completely change a relationship or outcome.
  • Unintended consequences show up everywhere, because people change their behavior in response to what you do.
  • Your brain falls into the pattern trap, telling neat cause-and-effect stories after the fact that don’t actually predict what will work next time.

Once you see these four forces clearly, it becomes obvious why:

  • More experts don’t magically fix culture, motivation, or conflict.
  • More data doesn’t guarantee better decisions in human systems.
  • Treating complex, human situations like simple “apply-rule-X” problems is a setup for repeated frustration.

Third, we put this into everyday context with three relatable scenarios:

  • A student who’s shutdown, late, or disengaged.
  • A co-worker or boss who digs in and blocks your project.
  • A spouse who forgets a chore or makes a small mistake that somehow turns into a big fight.

On the surface, each of these looks like it should have a straightforward answer: enforce a rule, present better data, correct the mistake. But as we unpack them, you’ll see why these situations are almost always complex human systems, not simple technical problems—and why trying to “fix” people usually backfires.

That’s just the setup.

If you watch the full episode, you’ll go beyond these insights into:

  • How to replace “solutions” with safe-to-fail probes that give you real information.
  • A powerful mental model called the OODA Loop (Observe, Orient, Decide, Act) that elite performers use to navigate uncertainty.
  • Concrete ways to apply this loop to your own stuck situations—at work, at home, and in your community—so each small “failure” becomes fuel for wiser action.

If you’ve ever felt like you’re doing everything “right” and still not getting the results you want with people, this episode will help you see why—and what to do differently. And, of course, consider stopping by my Linkedin in page or my Substack to check out the show, weekly.
