How a MindShifting Course Was Built for Adult Learners
When we transformed MindShifting: Mastering Your Resourceful Brain into an online course, the challenge wasn’t just what to teach—it was how to design the experience so people could actually use the ideas in real life.
Both Taru Vitanen and I came into this project already grounded in adult learning and instructional design. In the January 12 episode of MindShifting Monday with Mitch, we talked about how we drew on that background—cognitive load included—and what Taru personally took away from living inside the MindShifting concepts for months.

Designing for Adult Learners: Making Space for Real Change
Because adult learners bring rich life and work experience, good design has to respect their time, attention, and prior knowledge. Taru and I deliberately built the MindShifting course around principles of adult learning and instructional design, including managing cognitive load.
Since our brains can only juggle a limited number of items in working memory, we focused on removing friction so learners can concentrate on meaningful change:
- A predictable structure across six modules
- Visual cues for key takeaways, reflection prompts, and activities
- Short intro videos that set context and answer “Why does this matter?”
- Stories and personal anecdotes to create meaning and enhance recall
- Scenario-based interactive exercises that immediately apply theory
- AI “coach” avatars that guide reflection instead of just handing out answers
One lesson we highlighted is about the freeze reaction—going blank in a meeting, avoiding a task, or procrastinating on something important. That lesson blends story, neuroscience (prefrontal cortex and limbic system), practical techniques, and AI-supported reflection so learners can recognize freeze in themselves and shift into more resourceful responses.
The design goal: move MindShifting from “interesting ideas” to repeatable, usable habits.
Taru’s Biggest Personal Shift: Empathy Under Pressure
Taru didn’t just design the course—she was immersed in the MindShifting material for months. When I asked what most affected her personally, she pointed to Module 5, especially the work on empathy.
Her reflections included:
- Under pressure or in survival mode, empathy is often the first thing to disappear—for others and for ourselves.
- When empathy drops, we default to defending, blaming, or withdrawing instead of responding thoughtfully.
- MindShifting gave her tools to pause, notice what she’s feeling, and respond more constructively in difficult conversations.
- It helped her be less harsh on herself, replacing silent frustration with more understanding and reflection.
So this wasn’t just an instructional design exercise for her—it shifted how she relates to herself and others in challenging moments.
If you recognize patterns like freezing, overreacting, or beating yourself up—at work or at home—this course was built for you.
