Unlocking Proactive Thinking and Values-Driven Success: Insights from a Podcast

Recently, I had the pleasure of joining Doug Brown for our second in-depth conversation on the CEO Sales Strategy Podcast.

In our first episode together, we explored some of the foundational and introductory concepts of MindShifting—ideas that help set the stage for personal and professional transformation.

In this latest episode, we dove even deeper, covering a wide range of concepts and techniques that are essential for anyone looking to thrive in business and in life.

While our conversation touched on many important topics (and you can watch the entire conversation, below), I want to zoom in here on just two:

  1. Learning to think proactively, and
  2. Aligning your actions with your core values.

1) Learning to think proactively

These are not just abstract ideas—they are actionable strategies that can reshape your business and your life. In fact, they’re central themes in my upcoming book, MindShifting: Conflict and Collaboration.

Doug and I explored how everything we do, say, and feel are based on our mindsets. As Doug put it, “Your thoughts create your actions. Your actions create an outcome for you.”

It’s a simple truth, but one that’s often overlooked in the rush of daily business. Too many of us operate on autopilot, reacting to challenges instead of stepping back and asking, “How can I think about this more productively?”

I shared with Doug that, “Before you can do anything, you have to know you can, or at least think you might be able to. That all takes place in the brain.” We’re rarely taught how to harness our minds for our own long-term benefit, but it’s a skill that can be learned and practiced.

Doug emphasized the importance of this mindset shift, saying, “If we are the director of our own day, or the director of our own direction, or the director of others’ directions, and we don’t have our ability to rationally or reasonably think, and we’re just constantly reacting through the day, then we shut down any type of innovation because it’s a threat to us.”

Proactive thinking techniques included stepping back to ask yourself what type of problem you’re facing (simple, complicated, complex, or chaotic), using self-reflection to interrupt habitual or reactive thinking, and considering different possible outcomes before making decisions.

The consequence of not learning to think proactively? Over time, this reactive approach leads to missed opportunities, stagnation, and a lack of fulfillment both personally and professionally.

This is why proactive thinking is so critical—not just for business growth, but for personal fulfillment.

But thinking proactively is only half the equation.

2. Aligning your actions with your core values

The other half is making sure your actions are aligned with your personal values. As I noted during our conversation, “It’s relatively easy to say, ‘We should really consider our most important values every once in a while; to think, ‘are we meeting them?’ At the same time, understand that your brain is going to give you all the reasons why that’s a stupid thing to do.”

Our survival instincts often try to keep us in old patterns, but real growth comes from quieting those voices and reflecting on what truly matters.

Doug shared a powerful lesson he learned: “Build your life first, then build your business to serve your life.” It’s a reminder that success isn’t just about numbers—it’s about creating a life that reflects your evolving values and priorities.

The discussion highlighted that, without regular reflection on your values, it’s easy to get caught in patterns that may have served you in the past but no longer support your long-term well-being or goals. Over time, this misalignment can result in feeling stuck, dissatisfied, or regretful about how you’ve spent your time and energy.

Of course, these are just two of the many powerful concepts we discussed. I encourage you to tune into the CEO Sales Strategy Podcast to hear the full conversation and discover other important techniques that can help you unlock your potential.
