Today I’d like to invite you into a dialogue that means a great deal to me: The transformative strength of positive anticipation.
If you’re here, you’re are likely open to discussions related to cultivating resilience, improving your mindset, or simply discovering how to thrive, not just survive, in today’s world.
Recently, I had the privilege of joining Dr. Ronica Jacobs (Dr. Ro) on Lifejacked: The Resilience Podcast and you can listen to the full conversation, below.
In our discussion, we explore how resilience isn’t just about pushing through hard times. Rather, it’s about preparing your mind and spirit before adversity strikes.
I share my approach to life’s challenges, drawing on personal experiences and my mindshifting framework built on resourcefulness, resilience, and collaboration.
During our conversation, I guided Dr. Ro through this visualization exercise around something she finds challenging:
- Imagine a future where you’ve achieved your biggest goal—perhaps publishing a book, finishing a project, or simply overcoming a fear.
- Picture the sense of joy and fulfillment that comes with that victory. Not just picture it, imagine it with all your senses.
- Think about the challenge, how does your attitude now change?
That’s positive anticipation, and it’s a great MindShifting motivational technique.
It’s a tool I use daily, both for myself and with others: a way of rehearsing success in your mind so that when challenges appear, you’re not caught off guard, but motivated to rise.
With her insightful questioning, Dr. Ro then prompted me to share a personal story—a moment when I faced public criticism from my own father during an important meeting. LIke anyone else, my immediate reaction was one of hurt and anger. Rather than crumbling, I found a way to rally my team, reframe our mission, and turn adversity into unity. Moments like these have taught me that setbacks only define you if you let them. With the right mindset, you can transform any challenge into an opportunity for growth.
Family, relationships, and honest self-reflection are at the heart of building resilience. My mother taught me, through compassion and truth, the value of boundaries, loyalty, and forgiveness—even when life gets messy.
Throughout this conversation, you’ll find practical techniques: mental rehearsal, journaling, treating challenges as games, and practicing “from zero”—letting go of what’s past, and focusing on what’s possible in this moment.
I hope my story inspires you to run your own “life experiments,” to reflect, to collaborate, and most of all, to anticipate positive outcomes. Resilience isn’t about being unbreakable—it’s about choosing your response, building self-awareness, and seeing setbacks as chances for comebacks.
Thank you for joining me, and please consider subscribing to Dr. Ro’s Resilence Podcast.
Listen to the conversation, below, and let’s start building a world where anticipation, optimism, and courage spark true resilience.
