Recently, I had the pleasure of joining Jeff Mains on the SaaS Fuel podcast for a deep and wide-ranging conversation about leadership, self-awareness, and the science behind how our brains shape our decisions.
The episode is available at Saas Fuel Podcast.
You probably already know that I’m passionate about helping people break free from limiting mindsets and unlock their full potential. Our discussion touched on several key ideas that I believe are essential for anyone looking to lead more effectively, build resilience, and live a more fulfilling life. Here, I’d like to expand on five of the most important points we explored.
1. Understanding the Brain’s Role in Decision-Making
One of the foundational concepts we discussed is how our brains process decisions. Most of us like to think we’re rational beings, carefully weighing options before acting. In reality, much of our decision-making is driven by the limbic system—the part of the brain responsible for quick, instinctive reactions like fight, flight, or freeze. This system responds to stimuli in a fraction of a second, while our prefrontal cortex, which handles reasoning and justification, lags behind. This means that many of our “rational” decisions are actually justifications for what our emotional brain has already decided. Recognizing this can be a game-changer for leaders and individuals alike. When we’re aware of our brain’s wiring, we can pause, reflect, and choose to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively. This is a core theme in MindShifting, where I offer practical techniques for moving from reactive to resourceful thinking.
2. The Power of MindShifting and Self-Awareness
MindShifting is the practice of recognizing when we’re stuck in a limiting mindset and consciously choosing to see things differently. During the podcast, I shared a personal story about a travel mishap that could have ruined a vacation but instead became a memorable adventure—simply because I had the MindShifting skills to reframe the situation. Self-awareness is the first step. When we notice ourselves feeling stuck, frustrated, or defensive, it’s a signal that our limbic system is in control. By asking ourselves questions like, “What’s the best thing I can do given the current situation?” or “What else might be possible here?” we open the door to new solutions and greater happiness. This is a skill that can be developed with practice, and it’s at the heart of the MindShifting approach.
3. Embracing Curiosity and Humility
Another key takeaway from my conversation with Jeff was the importance of curiosity and humility, especially when confronted with the possibility of being wrong. Being certain is a sure-fire sign that we are in our limbic mind, not our resourceful mind. It’s natural to want to defend our positions, but real growth happens when we’re willing to ask, “What are they seeing that I’m not?” or “How might I be wrong here?” This mindset not only improves our decision-making but also strengthens our relationships. In leadership, it fosters a culture where people feel safe to share ideas and challenge assumptions. In MindShifting, I discuss how adopting a curious, humble attitude can transform conflict into collaboration and turn setbacks into opportunities for learning.
4. Leadership Is About Asking the Right Questions
Jeff and I agreed that effective leadership isn’t about having all the answers; it’s about asking the right questions. Leaders who are willing to listen, probe, and explore possibilities with their teams create environments where innovation and growth can flourish. Instead of telling people what to do, great leaders encourage others to come up with multiple solutions, weigh the pros and cons, and learn from the process. This not only leads to better outcomes but also empowers individuals to think critically and take ownership of their work. In my book, I provide frameworks for leaders to cultivate this kind of inquiry-based approach, which is especially valuable in today’s fast-changing world. If you listen to the podcast you will hear practical examples and techniques.
5. Spreading Resourcefulness, Resilience, and Collaboration
Finally, I shared my mission to reach millions with the skills of resourcefulness, resilience, and collaboration. These are essential capabilities for thriving in complexity and uncertainty. Whether you’re an educator, entrepreneur, or anyone seeking to make a positive impact, learning how to tap into your own resourcefulness, bounce back from setbacks, and work effectively with others is crucial. Through my courses, books, and community, I aim to equip people with practical tools for MindShifting and personal growth. As I told Jeff, it doesn’t matter whether people learn these skills from me or from others. The important thing is that we build a critical mass of individuals who can lead with empathy, adaptability, and vision.
In Closing…
I encourage you to reflect on these five points and consider how you might apply them in your own life and work.
