Reflections on MindShifting Course: Flexible Mindsets

These are reflections by an educator after the first session of the MindShifting Flexible Mindsets for Long Term Success Course.

What is 1 situation where you would like to use what you learned in this course to make an impact, and why did you choose that?

One thing that really stuck with me from the first session is how often we overcomplicate situations that are often much simpler than we initially realize. People tend to choose the obvious response and feel it was the only way, when in reality we should be taking a step back to consider other possible responses and be more open minded.

What do you want to learn from this course in order to improve that situation?

I would like to use what I have learned to improve how I react to misbehavior with students. It isn’t too often a one size fits all scenario and I think realizing that and producing strategies to handle it is important.

What is an example of a “simple” problem and how can it be solved?

A simple problem might be realizing you’re running low on soap. The clear solution is to get more soap.

What is an example of a problem that many people treat like a simple problem but is not? What type of problem is it?

People tend to act like behavior management is a simple problem, but it is not. One straight response for all students wont necessarily be the right response for everyone.

Why does it make the problem even worse when people treat it as if there is just one right answer, they know what that answer is, and anyone who disagrees is just wrong?

It can cause more damage to a student than good if they are punished in the wrong way. if a teacher yells at a student for playing with a toy, instead of approaching them with kindness and investigating a little bit, then the child might stop caring about the class and continue zoning out.
