Problem-solving: From the Flexible Mindsets for Long Term Success Course

“I’ve learned that most challenges aren’t simple cause-and-effect scenarios, but rather intricate webs of interconnected factors that influence each other in surprising ways.”

The second session of the Flexible Mindsets course is about the differences between Simple, Complicated, and Complex situations, and methods to generate rich solutions. Here are the reflection questions and one educator-participant’s thoughts.

What was the problem you chose, and what was the intervention or probe you chose to solve that problem?

Kids are not being engaged in schools. The probe I designed is called Student-Led Learning Lab, and I used the “three stories” scenario planning technique to examine possibilities.

What process did you choose to explore the possible effects and ramifications of that intervention?

My idea tackles the issue of student disengagement by envisioning a classroom that turns into a “Learning Lab ” giving students the flexibility to decide how and where they want to learn inside the class setting. I delved into scenarios in this exercise. From the ideal one where students are motivated and enthusiastic, about learning to the tougher situations where some might find it tough to adapt to their new freedom.

What happened as you explored the effects and how did that change the way you were thinking of your solution or the problem itself?

When I use scenario planning, I create a quiet space where I can map out different “what if” situations, using a combination of writing and sketching to explore various possibilities for my proposed solutions. To teach this process to others, I’d start with simple, relatable examples like planning a field trip, helping them see how thinking through different scenarios can lead to better preparation and more effective solutions.

I find that making the learning hands-on and collaborative is crucial, so I’d have people work in small groups to practice with real problems they’re facing, gradually building their confidence with this approach. Through regular practice and group discussions, I’d help others develop this valuable skill while creating a supportive community where we can share experiences and learn from each other’s scenario planning journeys.

How does knowing about complex situations change the way you look at some of the issues you face or that society faces?

I’ve learned that most challenges aren’t simple cause-and-effect scenarios, but rather intricate webs of interconnected factors that influence each other in surprising ways. This insight has shifted me away from looking for quick fixes and toward seeking deeper, more systemic solutions that consider multiple perspectives and factors simultaneously.

When I face challenges now, I’m more comfortable with uncertainty and the need to develop flexible strategies that can adapt as new information emerges. This new way of thinking has taught me to be more patient and thorough in my problem-solving approach, while helping me appreciate that meaningful change often requires addressing multiple layers of a situation rather than just its most visible symptoms.

Wonderful insights!
