The Hyper Pleaser
We have all met someone who is a habitual people pleaser—or perhaps you are one yourself. When you constantly bend over backward to accommodate others, you inevitably push your own needs aside. You mask your true desires and exhaust yourself trying to make everyone else comfortable. Eventually, you realize you are no longer writing your own life story; you are just playing a supporting role in everyone else’s.
During my recent appearance on the Empowering Real Talk podcast, my host, Coach Kay (Kisha Woods), shared her own profound experience with this trap. She openly described herself as a former “people pleaser times 5,000” who lacked clarity on what she wanted and operated entirely out of fear. She let everyone else narrate her story until 2020, when she made a conscious, transformational shift to step out of that survival mode and take control of her own life.
The Limbic Survival Trap
Why is it so easy to fall into the people-pleasing trap? It comes down to biology. Our brains are equipped with a survival center—the limbic system—that evolved to keep us alive. It reacts to the world in a blazing two-hundredths of a second. To keep us safe from perceived threats, it relies on a few basic responses: fighting, fleeing, freezing, falling back on deeply ingrained habits, or simply mimicking the behavior of the group to fit in.
People-pleasing is deeply rooted in these limbic responses. It is driven by a subconscious fear of being disliked or rejected by our “tribe.” Our survival brain convinces us that going along with others is the safest way to survive, and over time, this becomes a rigid habit. Society often reinforces this fear, handing both men and women specific “roles” and expectations; if we deviate from them, our limbic brain sounds the alarm.
Designing Our Own Way of Being
This is where MindShifting becomes a game-changer. MindShifting helps both men and women overcome these biological hurdles through a clear understanding of how the brain works. The limiting beliefs keeping you stuck are just “stories” your survival brain invents to protect you. Once you realize this, you can use practical exercises—like intentional self-talk, visualization, and strategic distraction—to clear out the stress hormones, wake up your resourceful brain, and actively rewrite your brain’s scripts and stories.
In this podcast episode, Coach Kay and I dive deep into several of these MindShifting methods to help you move out of fear-based reactions and into thoughtful, empowered responses. I highly encourage you to listen to the full conversation.
Furthermore, if you are tired of merely surviving and want to be fully empowered to meet your greatest potential, you should read my book, MindShifting: Stop Your Brain from Sabotaging Your Happiness and Success. It contains the complete toolkit you need to take back the pen and write the story you actually want to live.
